Recently we have participated on an infrastructure project of migration 300+ DB Instances / 100+ Apps from MSSQL 2000/2005 to MSSQL 2012/2014 platform.
We have started with analyse of data from CMDB and based on those data we prepared project plan based on Prince2 principles. We also created tool on platform that was familiar to customer – Microsoft Sharepoint. This tool was supposed to track all DB Instances/apps planned for migration. As a next step – we imported basic information from CMDB and we could start. We used this tracker to track every change. Every information received from app owner or infrastructure team was always recorded in this tracker. If management needed information about progress of any App – we were able to provide this information very fast.
The project was originally planned to start in OCT 2016 with planned completion in DEC 2016. Unfortunately it had to be extended due to lack of resources on customer side. The project was finally extended to end of MAR 2017.
