We all new about it – WS2003 was about to be out of support. Microsoft announced that few years before end of regular support. Biggest companies used the possibility of extended support from Microsoft – very expensive by the way.
Anyway many of those big companies haven’t handle migration of those outdated technologies on time. And we are not talking only WS2003 – it is only the most common case.
We were hired in summer 2016 by an international company to help them to design general process for dealing with those kind of outdated technologies that affects huge part of their infrastructure (mainly WS2003; MSSQL2000/2005 and Oracle v11 and below).
This project meant a lot of communication. We needed to talk to application owners/managers, application support teams, infrastructure teams for WINTEL/UNIX/Oracle/DBs. They were spread all over the world (all continents except Antarctica). This project was very challenging especially because it was all theoretical. We weren’t running any project, we were “only” working on guidelines for those kind of projects, that our customer will face in the future. We felt very responsible for the guidelines we were working on, even if we didn’t know that we will be chosen in future by this customer to help them with few first projects of this kind.
We have to admit that we are happy for that, because we had a chance to do few modifications on our guidelines and tools during those follow-up specific projects.
