MSSQL 2000/2005 to 2012/2014 Migration for 300+ DBs and 100+ Apps

Recently, we contributed to an infrastructure project migrating over 300 database instances and 100+ applications from MSSQL 2000/2005 to MSSQL 2012/2014.

We began by analyzing CMDB data, which informed a project plan developed using PRINCE2 principles. A tracking tool was built on Microsoft SharePoint, a platform familiar to the client, to monitor all database instances and applications targeted for migration. Initial CMDB data was imported to kickstart the process, and the tracker logged every change, capturing updates from application owners and the infrastructure team. This enabled rapid progress reporting to management.

Originally scheduled to start in October 2016 and conclude in December 2016, the project faced delays due to limited client resources. It was extended and ultimately completed by March 2017.
